Find out how to take accurate measurements of the windows at your property.

Measure your windows

Measuring your windows before purchasing replacements is an excellent idea. It is also useful to know how to measure windows for curtains. It can speed up the process, help you plan, and save you money. For an accurate and effective measurement of your window opening, you will need to find out the width, height, and depth. While it may seem like a difficult task, you can accurately measure your windows by following our guide:

Width

If you want to measure the width of your windows, you will need to identify the three jambs at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening. You need to measure between each of these three points to establish the width of your windows. Make sure to use the smallest of these measurements when ordering your replacement. It is important to make sure you measure from the surface of the jambs, as people often make the mistake of using the parting beads or trim strips as their starting point.

Height

When you are figuring out the height of your windows, you must take a further three measurements. Start at the highest point of the windowsill, and measure to the top of the window opening. For an accurate result, you will need to measure once on the left, once in the middle, and once on the right of your window. When you are ordering your new windows, use the smallest of the three height measurements.

Depth

You need to establish how much space there is between the inside window trim and the outside blind stop strip to find out the opening depth of your window. Don’t take any pulleys or parting strips into account, as they will have been removed by the time your replacement window is being installed. There needs to be at least 3 ¼ inches of opening depth in order for your new window to fit easily.
